EXPERIENCE BIATHLON STARS LIVE AND UP CLOSE

History

The CITY BIATHLON is a unique biathlon event that took place in Püttlingen, Saarland, from 2005 to 2014: elite sport featuring numerous world champions and Olympic gold medallists, with live shooting on an original 50 m small-bore shooting range set right in the heart of the city centre. The thrilling event, accompanied by an extensive supporting programme, attracted up to 20,000 spectators each year and was broadcast live on both national and international television. Nowhere else were the very best in the sport so close and accessible to their fans. Numerous Olympic champions, world champions and World Cup winners competed in this truly special format — and top athletes such as Kati Wilhelm, Michael Greis and Denise Herrmann-Wick even chose the City Biathlon for their farewell races.

From 2018 to 2023, the competition was held in the Hessian state capital of Wiesbaden. With a spectacular city-centre course and the shooting range set up on the Bowling Green directly in front of the magnificent Kurhaus, the event quickly established itself as one of the highlights in the city’s event calendar. At the same time, the German Ski Association repeatedly expressed the desire to move the major event closer to one of its training centres in order to create stronger momentum for youth development and talent recruitment.

In 2024, a new host city was found with the state capital Dresden. In cooperation with the German Ski Association (DSV) and the Saxon Ski Association (SVS), the event is designed to contribute to sustainable talent scouting and development, thereby strengthening youth programmes at the training centres. Thanks to its geographical proximity to the national training centre in Altenberg and the strong popularity of biathlon, supported by a diverse club landscape, Dresden offers ideal conditions for this approach.
